{"id":11240,"date":"2021-05-18T17:55:06","date_gmt":"2021-05-18T21:55:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/?p=11240"},"modified":"2021-05-18T17:55:18","modified_gmt":"2021-05-18T21:55:18","slug":"polk-county-native-wins-george-jenkins-volunteer-of-the-year-award","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/2021\/05\/18\/polk-county-native-wins-george-jenkins-volunteer-of-the-year-award\/","title":{"rendered":"Polk County native wins George Jenkins Volunteer of the Year award"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Kim Elmhorst of\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/www.jlgl.org\/\" target=\"_blank\">Greater Junior League of Lakeland<\/a>\u00a0has decades of experience in grass-root volunteer worked throughout Florida but admits she was still shocked to receive such an award.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Kim-Elmhorst.jpg?resize=200%2C300&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-11241\"\/><figcaption>Kim Elmhorst<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s honestly amazing, but in Chinese culture we were always raised to stay out of the limelight, so this is different,\u201d said Elmhorst. \u201cI follow people who have won the award like Carole Barnett, Barney Barnett \u2014 Mayor Bill Mutz received the award last year so, it\u2019s amazing that they consider me amongst people like that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elmhorst graduated from Southern Florida where she says she found her passion in volunteer work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI kind of started realizing that I could be a leader and had passion with volunteering when I was a student,\u201d she said. \u201cI left college and stayed at home to raise my kids but after 21 years, I wanted something for myself.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lakeland native says she was determined to be more than a stay-at-home mom. Over the years, Elmhorst served on the board of directors for The United Way of Central Florida, been a Reading Pal volunteer and served on the boards for Lakeland Volunteer in Medicine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elmhorst volunteered with The United Way for over 20 years.
