$500,000. That\u2019s how much is funding is needed to build and operate the African American Historical Museum of Lakeland. The museum would feature historical artifacts from Lakeland\u2019s Black neighborhoods, businesses + churches, with the hopes to open by 2023.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

While plans to build an African American Historical Museum in Lakeland are one step closer, there\u2019s still more work to be done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter the George Floyd killing, people were interested in learning more about African Americans and the way of life,\u201d said Doris Moore Bailey, African American Historical Museum of Lakeland founding member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That\u2019s where the African American Historical Museum of Lakeland would come in. Lakeland\u2019s Black community leaders are working on establishing the museum and have been gifted free property to build it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cOn the corner of Emma and New York Avenue here in Lakeland. And so that\u2019s in the heart of the community actually,\u201d Moore Bailey said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With property secured, board members are now focused on another hurdle. They estimate it will take at least half a million dollars to open and operate the museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThat will take a massive fundraising campaign and we\u2019re looking probably to hopefully get support from all over, from grants and donations,\u201d said Moore Bailey.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The exhibits would feature artifacts from Lakeland\u2019s Black neighborhoods, businesses, and churches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is needed because our history needs to be captured correctly and displayed correctly,\u201d Moore Bailey said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
