Gene Conrad Lakeland Linder International Airport Manager\u00a0has expressed hope that efforts to attract a large commercial carrier to service Polk County in the next few years. With the overuse of Tampa and Orlando international airports in the past years, it would be a home run for Lakeland Linder that a large commercial carrier would be looking for better and more profitable routes and that\u2019s why Lakeland Linder International is so important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keep in mind what has happened at the airport just within the past year, beginning with the city’s commitment to set aside $1 million to help land passenger-carrier service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2018 opening of a U.S. Customs office at Lakeland Linder Regional Airport made it an international airport; by adding the maintenance facility and expanding the Customs services to include international freight, it will also be an industrial one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 2019\/2020 Amazon has created an air-cargo terminal for the trillion-dollar online retailer at Lakeland Linder. Under the terms of the 20-year deal, Amazon has leased 47 acres to build a seven-jet hangar, paying $80,000 a month in rent, and pay surcharges on the amount of cargo brought in and fuel purchased. Now in 2021 Amazon has activated an option in their agreement with the City of Lakeland to expand onto additional 62 acres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Instead of 12 in and 12 out presently to 22 in and 22 outbound planes by 2023\/2024. The current package with Amazon brought 800 to 1,000 jobs to the airport, but in proposed additional 62 acres build-out will add an additional 900 to 1,100 jobs. This means millions of more dollars of impact not just for the airport but for the community of Lakeland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some residents near Lakeland Linder International have shared with the City Commissioners their understandable worries about noise, traffic, and deterioration of local roads. In addition, and more troubling, they were concerned about the lack of transparency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let\u2019s deal with transparency first, Conrad sent the Lakeland Gazette<\/em> Environmental Assessments, Intermodal Feasibility Study, Master Plan FAA, and the Lakeland Strategic Planning which all have had public comment times. Plus all City Commission meetings have public comment times. So how much more transparency do they want?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Noise, yes noise can and will be part of Lakeland Linder’s future with the added Amazon addition and future large commercial carriers, but Conrad is currently working on a new flight path with the FAA approval sometime this fall 2021. So let\u2019s give Gene Conrad Lakeland Linder International Airport Manager\u00a0the needed time to try mitigating the noise issues and getting the FFA approval.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since late 2010 all new construction including the approximately 3,000 new homes approved for construction off\u00a0Pipkin Road has an Aviation Easement in all deeds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Aviation Easement<\/a>: The unobstructed use and passage of all types of aircraft in and through the airspace at any height or altitude above the surface of the land. The right of said aircraft to cause noise, vibrations, fumes, deposits of dust, fuel particles (incidental to the normal operation of aircraft); fear, interference with sleep or communication, and any other effects associated with the normal operation of aircraft taking off, landing or operating in the vicinity of (Airport).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Traffic and deterioration of local roads can be an issue with more and more employees working at the airport. Lakeland Gazette<\/em> reached out to Lakeland and Polk County DOT. Polk County has widened Pipkin Road through the airport corridor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Southeastern University announced a partnership with a flight school and an airline at the facility to create an accelerated pilot-training program, which kicked off in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Keys to the World Aviation, a new corporate jet service, began construction of a new $9 million, 59,000-square-foot headquarters at the airport for its six-jet fleet. Which now the headquarters is completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Florida Department of Economic Opportunity awarded the airport a nearly $5 million grant for new hangars, which helps the airport expand its cargo and maintenance operations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

City Commissioners agreed to spend more than $2 million, almost all of which was funded by the federal government, to improve its terminal apron. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
