On Monday, a photograph on Spessard Holland Elementary School\u2019s Facebook page showed teachers packed into the cafeteria for professional development training. By Wednesday evening, the school had to be shut down \u201cdue to multiple cases of COVID-19 impacting the school.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe are aware of eight confirmed cases of staff members testing positive at Spessard Holland Elementary,\u201d Polk County Public Schools spokesman Jason Geary said. \u201cResults are pending on some other staff members.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

School officials said\u00a0Spessard\u00a0Holland, just north of Bartow, would\u00a0undergo deep cleaning to make sure it is safe for the start of school on Tuesday.\u00a0On Thursday at noon, there were no cars in the school\u2019s parking lot and no one was seen on campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIn the meantime, the school\u2019s office will be closed until Monday, Aug. 9,\u201d the Spessard Holland Facebook page stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In addition, Friday\u2019s orientation has been shifted to virtual, with parents asked to log into a Zoom link on ClassDojo that teachers will provide.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At least three other Polk County Public Schools have shifted to virtual orientation, as well: Boone Middle School in Haines City, Lake Alfred Polytech, and the new Willow Oak Elementary in Mulberry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
