{"id":15643,"date":"2021-10-08T17:18:31","date_gmt":"2021-10-08T21:18:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/?p=15643"},"modified":"2021-10-08T17:18:42","modified_gmt":"2021-10-08T21:18:42","slug":"wild-wild-west-shootout-between-motorcycle-gangs-on-i-4","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/2021\/10\/08\/wild-wild-west-shootout-between-motorcycle-gangs-on-i-4\/","title":{"rendered":"Wild Wild West &#8230; shootout between motorcycle gangs on I-4"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A man and a woman riding on motorcycles were shot on I-4 in Polk County early Friday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full is-resized\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1110px) 100vw, 1110px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Sheriff-Grady-Judd.jpg?resize=205%2C143&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-759\" width=\"205\" height=\"143\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Sheriff-Grady-Judd.jpg?w=640&amp;ssl=1 640w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Sheriff-Grady-Judd.jpg?resize=300%2C210&amp;ssl=1 300w\" \/><figcaption> Sheriff Grady Judd <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deputies responded just after midnight to what was initially reported as a single-vehicle motorcycle crash on I-4 eastbound near the US 27 overpass.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During a press conference, Sheriff Grady Judd said preliminary information indicated that 38-year-old Ronald Donovan, a member of the Sin City Deciples Motorcycle Club, along with at least two other motorcyclists, were heading toward Orlando on I-4 when two Thug Riders, a different motorcycle gang, drove past him. Sheriff Judd said, &#8220;then there was some skirmishing and some driving about 100 mph,&#8221; which lead to Donovan shooting at one of the Thug Riders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The 36-year-old Hispanic male, who Donovan shot, told deputies he felt the sharp pain in his back and immediately fired back. According to Judd, his bullet struck a 33-year-old woman, who was sitting behind Donovan, in the head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;She&#8217;s going to die,&#8221; Sheriff Judd said. &#8220;She&#8217;s not dead yet, but she is mortally wounded, according to the information that we received from the hospital, it is a through and through wound just above the ear and comes out the other side.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Judd said after being shot, the woman fell off the motorcycle and Ronald stopped. Judd added that Ronald and the woman have been friends for nearly 10 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At that time, the man Donovan shot, drove to Champions Gate and stopped at a Papa John&#8217;s where he called 9-1-1 and told them he had been shot on the interstate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?height=314&#038;href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fpolkcountysheriff%2Fvideos%2F269865581674601%2F&#038;show_text=false&#038;width=560&#038;t=0\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowFullScreen=\"true\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Deputies, per Sheriff Judd, were sent to both locations where they determined it was not a motorcycle crash as they initially believed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We have witnesses that said they were wearing gang colors, but by the time we arrived they were not only not wearing their gang colors, their gang colors weren&#8217;t there,&#8221; Sheriff Judd said. &#8220;Ronald had two empty gun holsters when he was taken into custody, but there were no firearms around. Just as deputies were arriving, they saw a motorcycle leave the scene and we suspect the person on that motorcycle may have the gang colors and\/or the firearms.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">At this time, Sheriff Judd said it appears as though the man Donovan shot in the back was acting in self-defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Now keep in mind&#8230;when we are trying to determine what happened, he (Donovan) says, &#8216;I know my rights, I don&#8217;t have to talk to you, I take the fifth.&#8217; Dude, your girlfriend is just shot off the back of your motorcycle, is in extremely critical condition, and you won&#8217;t cooperate to tell us what happened. &#8216;I know my rights,&#8217; well he needs his rights.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Donovan was arrested on the scene for the following charges:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Battery on an officer<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Resisting arrest<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attempted second-degree felony murder on the 33-year-old woman \u2014 If the woman dies, per Sheriff Judd, that will change to felony murder because &#8220;all evidence indicates he started the shooting.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attempted first-degree murder on the 36-year-old man he shot<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Interstate 4 eastbound was shut down to through traffic at CR557 at about 3:30 a.m. and all three eastbound lanes reopened to travel around 9:30 a.m.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We had bullet cases from three different firearms scattered over a half-mile,&#8221; Judd said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sheriff Judd said he hopes to have a wrap-up on the shooting on Monday.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A man and a woman riding on motorcycles were shot on I-4 in Polk County early Friday morning.
