Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics FRIDAY MORNING – South Florida Avenue 9:30 AM (Publix Southgate to Publix Lake Miriam)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Polk County Law Enforcement Torch Run will take place on Friday, November 5, 2021 on South Florida Avenue in Lakeland, weather permitting. Law Enforcement agencies from across Polk County will join Special Olympics athletes in this symbolic morning run to help bring awareness for Special Olympics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program starts at 9:30 a.m. in the parking lot of Publix at Southgate, located at 2515 South Florida Ave. The run will travel approximately 2.8 miles with a rolling escort south on South Florida Avenue to Publix at Lake Miriam, 4730 South Florida Avenue. During the run, various members of Polk County agencies will pass the torch along the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Please leave extra time to travel on South Florida Avenue during the Torch Run as only one (1) southbound lane will be open while the runners make their way to finish line. Northbound lanes will remain open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Citizens all along the route are encouraged to cheer the runners on as they pass by.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In 1981, Chief Richard LaMunyon, Wichita, KS, had an idea to get Law Enforcement involved and raise awareness for Special Olympics and from there the Torch Run was established. The International Association of Chiefs of Police adopted the program and is recognized as the founding organization of the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run. Lakeland Police officers have participated in the Torch Run since its inception and have raised funds for Special Olympics through the Torch Run and other special events.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
