{"id":17135,"date":"2021-11-13T19:17:44","date_gmt":"2021-11-14T00:17:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/?p=17135"},"modified":"2021-11-13T19:18:19","modified_gmt":"2021-11-14T00:18:19","slug":"seu-womens-basketball-stifles-ave-maria-in-sun-opener","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/2021\/11\/13\/seu-womens-basketball-stifles-ave-maria-in-sun-opener\/","title":{"rendered":"SEU Women&#8217;s Basketball Stifles Ave Maria in SUN Opener"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The No. 5 Southeastern University women&#8217;s basketball team turned in a stout defensive effort, as the Fire defeated the Ave Maria University Gyrenes 63-44 in their Sun Conference Opener.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1110px) 100vw, 1110px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/unnamed-1.jpg?resize=300%2C200&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17136\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Fire held the Gyrenes to an astounding sub-20% shooting performance from the field, as AMU made just 19.5% (15-77) from the field, including 17.5% (7-40) from three-point range.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Southeastern set the tone in the first quarter, outscoring Ave Maria 31-7 through the first 10 minutes of action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Gyrenes outscored the Fire in both the second (13-11) and third (13-8) periods to trail by 17 heading into the final period of play. However, SEU shot 40% (4-10) from the field and made five free throws down the stretch of the fourth quarter to help close out the contest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">SEU graduate point guard&nbsp;<dfn><a href=\"https:\/\/fire.seu.edu\/roster.aspx?rp_id=4214\">Tahanee Bennell<\/a><\/dfn>&nbsp;had a dynamic day of shooting for the Fire, dialing in five of six three-point attempts to help propel her to a team-high 17 points, while also swiping four steals. Fire graduate center&nbsp;<dfn><a href=\"https:\/\/fire.seu.edu\/roster.aspx?rp_id=4218\">Angela Perry<\/a><\/dfn>&nbsp;notched a double-double, scoring 13 and hauling in 11 boards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Fire continue Sun Conference play in the Peach State next week, as Southeastern takes on the College of Coastal Georgia Mariners in Brunswick next Thursday.
