Lakeland city commissioners have chosen not to act on repeated requests to make Lakeland a \u201csanctuary city for the unborn\u201d which would, in effect, remove the abortion clinic in Lakeland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lakeland city commissioners which are mostly pro-life declined to enter the idea of a \u201csanctuary city for the unborn.\u201d Even when Pastor Jon Friedt, of Believers Fellowship on North Socrum Loop Road, and several members of his church came a knocking. Citing the Bible and religious convictions, they have asked the city to close the Lakeland Women\u2019s Health Center, 4444 S. Florida Ave.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commissioner Chad McLeod City asked City Attorney Palmer Davis to shared his research on the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Davis responded that the focus of the commission should be on the role of local government only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He went on to say, \u201cRegardless of how you feel about the underlying issue, currently abortion, at certain stages, is a lawful procedure that\u2019s received protection from the Supreme Court, also recognized by Florida statutes and by the Florida Supreme Court.
