With a hand full of bags, Halbert \u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b\u200b steps to the spotlight and\nlets it fly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I get a lot of rotation on the bag and that’s because\nI have a lot of wrist action on my throw,” the Lakeland 22-year-old said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Halbert recently won national championships in singles\nand doubles competitions in cornhole, a game that started at tailgate parties\nand cookouts. It’s now played on national television.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Halbert is one of the best players in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I think my longest streak is 38 in the hole in a\nrow,” he said. “A lot of people don’t realize how big it is and how\nmuch money you can win.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He took home more than $6,000 for\nwinning the championships in Pennsylvania and Las Vegas. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

When people tell Halbert it looks easy, “I tell them\nto go home and try it.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He said when he was in high school, he and his father\nand his friends would play hours at a time, three or four nights a week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I put my practice in to get where I’m at and once you\nfigure it out, it’s muscle memory from there,” Halbert said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He works as a groundskeeper for the city of\nLakeland, so if he walks upon a friendly game being played by people he\ndoesn’t know, he never tries to hustle them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I just watch,” he said with a smile. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Halbert said he plans to play competitively for years to\ncome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“People play from 10 years old into their\n70s,” he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
