{"id":17875,"date":"2021-12-05T23:17:55","date_gmt":"2021-12-06T04:17:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/?p=17875"},"modified":"2021-12-06T18:59:06","modified_gmt":"2021-12-06T23:59:06","slug":"fatal-hit-and-run-crash","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/2021\/12\/05\/fatal-hit-and-run-crash\/","title":{"rendered":"Fatal hit and run crash"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Polk County Sheriff&#8217;s Office Traffic Homicide Unit is investigating a fatal hit and run crash which occurred in unincorporated Lakeland, at about 6:13 PM, Sunday, December 5, 2021. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"450\" height=\"362\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1110px) 100vw, 1110px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/265025473_267544188742291_6136966891113085510_n.jpg?resize=450%2C362&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17876\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/265025473_267544188742291_6136966891113085510_n.jpg?w=450&amp;ssl=1 450w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/265025473_267544188742291_6136966891113085510_n.jpg?resize=300%2C241&amp;ssl=1 300w\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A work van struck a bicyclist on 1st Street NW, near Stroud Road, in the Kathleen area of Lakeland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The work van then sped away from the scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The bicyclist passed away from injuries a short time later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">36-year old Antonio Adam Smiley was struck and seriously injured at around 6:13 PM as he rode his bicycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When deputies and members from Polk County Fire Rescue arrived on scene, Mr. Smiley was speaking to them. He was transported to a local hospital with what appeared to be non-life threatening injuries, but passed away after arriving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"557\" height=\"243\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1110px) 100vw, 1110px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/capturef6bd406a928f458f93a764a943697906.jpg?resize=557%2C243&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-17897\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/capturef6bd406a928f458f93a764a943697906.jpg?w=557&amp;ssl=1 557w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/capturef6bd406a928f458f93a764a943697906.jpg?resize=300%2C131&amp;ssl=1 300w\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Traffic Homicide detectives believe the suspect vehicle is an older model white Ford E350 work van. The van likely has damage to the right front area (passenger side), including a non-working right front headlight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;The driver of the van knew that a person was struck, and then made no effort to check on Mr. Smiley. He or she showed no concern for Mr. Smiley&#8217;s condition. In fact, the only concern the driver had was to get away as quickly as possible.
