He looks to Fire Chief Doug Riley and his friend Larry Dobbs as his mentors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Rick says that what he will miss the most are his co-workers. \u201cThe work will fade&#8211; the friendships will remain,\u201d he says. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Relationships are an essential part of the assistant chief\u2019s work at LFD, and he stresses that \u201cwithout working relationships, nothing would ever get done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201dThe most important quality in a successful firefighter is to have a servant\u2019s heart, Rick states. \u201cThere is no greater act of kindness than to help someone with compassion in their time of need.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe first thing I\u2019m going to do is [after retirement] is breathe.\u201d Alongside his wife, he plans to travel around the United States and \u201cnot think about what comes next.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After more than 30 years in service to the City of Lakeland, our very own Assistant Chief Rick Hartzog is announcing his retirement.
