COVID-19 is overwhelming Polk County at a rate not seen since the last major wave of July through September 2020.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The county\u2019s new infections soared 66.6% in Friday\u2019s weekly update from the Florida Department of Health.  With the positivity rate for COVID testing vaulted to 33.8%, to its highest point ever.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The positivity rate rose from 26.1% to 31.81%. Department of Health officials have said that any positivity rate over 10% signals a dangerous level of community spread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All 67 Florida counties are now deemed at high community transmission, accord to the CDC dashboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polk County registered 355 COVID-related hospitalizations in the past week, the CDC reported. That is an increase of 152% from a week earlier. But the use of intensive-care beds for COVID patients rose only 3.8%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CDC defines \u201cfully vaccinated\u201d as having received an initial two-dose regimen of Pfizer or Moderna vaccines or one dose of Johnson & Johnson. The CDC now recommends supplementary doses six months after the initial round of vaccinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The CDC website shows that 30.5% of Polk County residents have received full initial doses and booster rounds. The percentage is 43.4% for those 50 and older and 51.7% for those 65 and older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Florida registered nearly 398,000 new infections in Friday\u2019s update for a jump of 33.1%. The statewide positivity rate for the week was 31.2%.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
