Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday said he would be \u201creceptive\u201d to discussions around changing a decades-long state law that grants Disney the power to self-govern its Disney World property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u200bThe governor made the comments while answering reporters\u2019 questions during a news conference in Titusville<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cSo me as the governor, I could be presented with changes to that,\u201d DeSantis said. \u201cI think I\u2019ve said I\u2019d be receptive to that. But ultimately, the legislature would have to move forward. So I know that there\u2019s a lot of discussion about that, and we\u2019ll just see how that shakes out.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The governor\u2019s response on Friday came after State Rep. Spencer Roach, R-North Fort Myers, tweeted that lawmakers had met twice<\/a> to discuss repealing the 1967 state law that allowed Disney to establish Reedy Creek Improvement District.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Through this arrangement, Reedy Creek runs as its own government, providing fire protection, emergency, utility, and planning services for the property around Disney World.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIf Disney wants to embrace woke ideology, it seem fitting that they should be regulated by Orange County,\u201d Roach tweeted.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Both Roach and DeSantis\u2019 remarks came after Disney took a public stance against the state\u2019s controversial Parental Rights in Education measure, which was signed into law by DeSantis on Monday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The law bans classroom instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in kindergarten through third grade, or \u201cin a manner that is not age appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After initially not commenting on the legislation, Disney publicly opposed the then bill, which had been dubbed as the \u201cDon\u2019t Say Gay\u201d bill by critics, during an annual shareholders meeting earlier this month.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When the bill was signed into law, Disney issued a statement that said the bill \u201cshould never have been signed into law\u201d and that it would work to get the law repealed or \u201cstruck down in the courts<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DeSantis responded by stating that the company had \u201ccrossed the line.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
