In their home opener, the No. 25 Southeastern University men’s soccer team edged NCAA DII St. Leo in double overtime with a score of 1-0 in an exhibition. Senior Jake Van Der Luit scored the lone goal of the match in the 103rd minute of play that sent Fire fans home happy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With under seven minutes to play in the second overtime, Van Der Luit saw an opportunity to win the game and capitalized. “I saw a chance to shoot and just tried to hit it as hard as I could and got the lucky bounce off the crossbar,” Van Der Luit stated when asked about the game winning goal. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

SEU head coach Clay Roberts<\/a> was pleased with how his team executed in their home opener commenting, “We came out as a collective group and executed our game plan to the T\u2026 A goal we set in the preseason was to not drop a game at home no matter what the tagline next to it was.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Southeastern and Saint Leo kept pace with each other offensively throughout the match as they were tied with nine total shots a piece at the end of regulation. However, the Fire out-shot Saint Leo 4-3 in the overtime periods. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Goalies Carlos Curado<\/a>, Bryce Mitchell<\/a>, and Logan Whitney<\/a> combined to shut out the Lions Mitchell and Whitley were especially clutch as they both had two saves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
