Did you know that during 2018, there were a total of 485,270\nproperty crimes here in Florida? Were you also aware that, according to\nAlarms.org, across America, break-ins are 6% more likely to occur during\ndaytime between 6 am and 6 pm while people are at work or running errands? As\nwell, a report from U.S Department of Justice showed that from 1993 to 2010, on\naverage, burglary rates were highest during the summer with about 9% lower\nrates in spring, 6% lower in the fall and 11% lower in the winter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I am giving you these statistics for a very specific reason.\nA few evenings ago, a local television reporter had come to my door looking for\nsomeone to speak with him regarding a recent break-in at a home in my\nneighborhood. The reporter wanted to know the specific feelings of neighbors\nand what plans they were now taking to prevent their homes from being\nburglarized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I explained to the reporter during my interview, I am\nformerly employed in law enforcement and have the benefit of government\ntraining. I know that my training does not guarantee my home\u2019s safety but it\ndoes gives me a small advantage in making my home more likely not to be\nburglarized.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let me make a few suggestions to help you make your home\nmore burglar-resistant and less likely to be victimized,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1)      Know your neighbors.\nAs unpopular as it is in today\u2019s society, make friends with your neighbors.\nThey may be an asset to the defense of your home. You want as many \u201ceyes and\nears\u201d on your property, looking and listening for anyone or anything out of the\nordinary.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

2)      Purchase and install\nsecurity cameras and lights. Doorbell cameras with microphone and speaker are\nespecially helpful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3)      Install two-way locks\non doors requiring keyed entry and exit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4)      Get a dog! You should\nlook for a dog that likes to bark loudly. Burglars do not like dogs! Dogs are a\ndefinite deterrence.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
