The Firehouse Subs Public Safety Foundation awarded Polk County Fire Rescue a $36,665 grant to purchase a new HURST Jaws of Life Water Compatible Extrication Tool Set for their fleet. At Tuesday\u2019s Polk County Board of County Commissioners meeting, county commissioners accepted the grant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWith close to 555 freshwater lakes within Polk County alone, this new HURST Equipment will serve as a major asset for Polk County Fire Rescue personnel,\u201d Chief Robert Weech said. \u201cOur personnel will be able to use this new HURST extrication equipment for a variety of rescue efforts without having to worry about damaging the tool due to prolonged water exposure in the field.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Extrication equipment allows emergency rescue personnel to remove victims from their vehicle if they were involved in an accident or for other rescues involving victims that are entrapped within a small space. Extrication toolsets like the HURST toolset that Polk County Fire Rescue will purchase with the grant include a cutting device which is used to cut various types of vehicle metals, a spreading device, which is used to separate vehicle doors from their hinges, and extension rams which are used to expand a confined area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
