Former congressman Dennis Ross of Lakeland has suspended his campaign for the open seat in U.S. House District 15.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ross\u2019 campaign made the announcement Monday afternoon. He was one of eight Republican candidates running in the district, which covers much of Lakeland as well as parts of Hillsborough and Polk counties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAfter much thought, deliberation and prayer, I have decided to withdraw my candidacy,\u201d Ross said in a statement. \u201cI firmly believe that I am the most qualified candidate in this eight-person race, and I had been looking forward to running a very positive, issue-oriented campaign. However, with limited resources and a crowded field of candidates, I have decided to discontinue my efforts.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cTo all my supporters who have invested in me, I want to say that I am deeply humbled and grateful for your support,\u201d Ross said in the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After pledging to send refunds to campaign donors, Ross addressed the field\u2019s remaining candidates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is my belief that the voters of the 15th Congressional do not wish to endure campaigns that engage in bitterness and negativity, and those candidates who do so are indicative of not having any merit in their issues,\u201d he wrote. \u201cI challenge each of you to act with statesmanship and pursue issue-oriented campaigns, not personal attacks.
