Brendan Carr, one of the FCC\u2019s commissioners, shared a letter via Twitter<\/a> on Tuesday, addressed to Tim Cook of Apple and Sundar Pichai of Alphabet Inc. (the parent company of Google) asking them to remove TikTok from their app stores for its \u201cpattern of surreptitious data practices.\u201d <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTiktok is owned by Beijing-based ByteDance \u2013 an organization that is beholden to the Communist Party of China and required by Chinese Law to comply with PRC\u2019s surveillance demands,\u201d reads the letter, dated June 24. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The commissioner said he believed that \u201cTikTok\u2019s pattern of conduct and misrepresentations regarding the unfettered access that persons in Beijing have to sensitive U.S. user data” violated Apple\u2019s and Google\u2019s standards. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the letter, TikTok collects everything from search histories to \u201ckeystroke patterns and biometric identifiers, including faceprints, and voiceprints,\u201d as well as collecting location data, text, images and videos stored on the device\u2019s clipboard. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cTikTok is not what it appears to be on the surface,\u201d reads the letter. \u201cIt is not just an app for sharing funny videos or memes. That\u2019s the sheep\u2019s clothing. At its core, TikTok functions as a sophisticated surveillance tool that harvests extensive amounts of personal and sensitive data.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chinese company ByteDance, which owns TikTok, faced scrutiny under former President Donald Trump, who said that the app may be \u201cused for disinformation campaigns that benefit the Chinese Communist Party,\u201d back in August of 2020. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tiktok has consistently denied those allegations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, TikTok announced<\/a> that it had started routing American users\u2019 data to U.S.-based servers owned by Oracle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

But, according to the commissioner, this does not provide any protection against data being accessed in Beijing. \u201cIt says nothing about where that data can be accessed from,\u201d wrote Carr. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this month, Buzzfeed News published a report<\/a> that detailed leaked audio from more than 80 internal TikTok meetings. The audio exposed that TikTok employees based in China had \u201crepeatedly accessed nonpublic data about U.S. TikTok users\u201d from September 2021 to January 2022. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Carr has asked Alphabet and Apple to respond to his request to remove Tiktok from their app stores by July 8. <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
