President Donald Trump in a statement on Saturday said late al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden<\/a> ‘s son Hamza bin\nLaden had been “killed in a United States counterterrorism operation in\nthe Afghanistan\/Pakistan region.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He did not give a time period for the operation or the\ndeath.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“The loss of Hamza bin Ladin not only deprives\nal-Qa’ida of important leadership skills and the symbolic connection to his\nfather, but undermines important operational activities of the group,” the\nPresident said in the statement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Trump also said “Hamza bin Ladin was responsible for\nplanning and dealing with various terrorist groups.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN previously reported on July 31<\/a> that the US believed\nHamza bin Laden was dead, citing a US official. The official told CNN at the\ntime that the US had a role in this death but did not provide details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

CNN terrorism analyst Paul Cruickshank told CNN at the time\nthat one thing puzzled researchers who are closely tracking al Qaeda: “If\nHamza bin Laden has indeed been dead for months, you would expect al Qaeda to\nhave released some form of eulogy before today. The fact they haven’t is highly\nunusual, given his status in the group.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

US Secretary of Defense Mark Esper also appeared to confirm<\/a> in a Fox News interview in\nAugust that Hamza bin Laden was dead.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Earlier this year the US State Department called bin Laden,\nwho was believed to be in his early 30s, an “emerging” leader in the terror group<\/a> ,\noffering a million-dollar reward for information leading to his capture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The State Department said items seized from the elder bin\nLaden’s hiding place in Pakistan during the US Navy SEAL raid in 2011 that\nresulted in his death indicated he was grooming Hamza bin Laden to replace him\nas al Qaeda’s leader.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saudi Arabia revoked Hamza bin Laden’s citizenship, official\nnewspaper Um al-Qura reported earlier this year, citing a royal order issued to\nthe Interior Ministry.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
