{"id":26463,"date":"2022-10-23T15:16:20","date_gmt":"2022-10-23T19:16:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/?p=26463"},"modified":"2022-10-23T15:16:34","modified_gmt":"2022-10-23T19:16:34","slug":"video-polk-county-deputy-shot-by-a-suspect","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/2022\/10\/23\/video-polk-county-deputy-shot-by-a-suspect\/","title":{"rendered":"Video: Polk County Deputy shot by a suspect"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"THELEDGER-Embed Player\" width=\"540\" height=\"350\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/uw-media.theledger.com\/embed\/video\/10522804002?placement=snow-embed\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Polk Sheriff&#8217;s Department released a video showing an encounter in which a deputy was shot in the chest by a suspect in a domestic disturbance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A man was arrested after shooting a Polk County deputy in the chest Wednesday evening, according to the sheriff\u2019s office.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"414\" height=\"512\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1110px) 100vw, 1110px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/gabriel-batista-mug-shot.jpg?resize=414%2C512&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-26464\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/gabriel-batista-mug-shot.jpg?w=414&amp;ssl=1 414w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/gabriel-batista-mug-shot.jpg?resize=243%2C300&amp;ssl=1 243w\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The shooting happened in the Tanglewood Preserve subdivision in Davenport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Polk County Sheriff\u2019s Office said two deputies \u2014 Deputy Nicole Lyons and Deputy Harodis \u201cTony\u201d Nunez \u2014 responded to the home around 10 p.m. due to a family disturbance. Sheriff Grady Judd said during a news conference Thursday afternoon that the disturbance was between Gabriel Batista, 41, and his wife as the two had separated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/plugins\/video.php?href=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.facebook.com%2Fpolkcountysheriff%2Fvideos%2F638867347589395%2F&#038;show_text=0&#038;width=560\" width=\"560\" height=\"315\" style=\"border:none;overflow:hidden\" scrolling=\"no\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowFullScreen=\"true\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sheriff said the woman told deputies Batista showed up to the home and was \u201cknocking on the doors,\u201d prompting her to call authorities. When deputies arrived, Judd said Batista had left.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSo they\u2019re talking to the victim of this harassment, the stalking and during this conversation, but lo and behold, one of the children sees dad pull up out front. So our deputies immediately go outside to have a conversation with him,\u201d the sheriff said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Judd said Batista approached the deputies with his hands behind his back. The deputies asked Batista to show his hands and he refused.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Judd said one of the deputies prepared to tase him, while the other held a gun on Batista. When one of the deputies attempted to tase him, Batista shot at the deputy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe suspect shot at Deputy Nunez six times. He struck him one time, center mass, right in the center of the chest. Out of the six shots,\u201d Judd said. \u201cThat was a blessing. It was a blessing because our deputy was wearing his bulletproof vest and he was wearing the St. Michael\u2019s medallion that he says he never leaves home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sheriff said the deputy had a scuff mark on his chest and that the bullet is believed to have gone through the vest to the medallion, causing the scratch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The deputy then fired at Batista, who then surrendered. The sheriff\u2019s office said Batista was uninjured and arrested.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Batista faces charges of attempted first-degree murder of a law enforcement officer, written threat to kill, resisting with violence, and discharging a firearm on residential property.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The investigation is ongoing.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Polk Sheriff&#8217;s Department released a video showing an encounter in which a deputy was shot in the chest by a suspect in a domestic disturbance.
