Listed on the National Register of Historic Places<\/a>, is a topographical optical illusion called Spook Hill<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The story goes that many ages ago, there was an\u00a0Indian village in Lake Wales\u00a0that was\u00a0plagued by sudden attacks from a giant alligator. The chief killed the gator and in the midst of the battle, a small lake was created. The chief was eventually buried on the north side. Later on, pioneer mail riders discovered that their horses were laboring downhill, thus resulting in the name \u201cSpook Hill.\u201d When the road was eventually paved, cars were pushed uphill.<\/p>\n\n\n

And so the question remains: Is the gator seeking revenge or is the chief protecting his land?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you drive over to Spook Hill (east side of N. Wales Drive\/5th St.<\/a>), you\u2019ll be able to experience it all for yourself. There\u2019s a sign marking the starting point with the following instructions: \u201cStop on the white line, take your car out of gear, and let it roll back.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
