The great Target outage of 2019 continued on a smaller\nscale Sunday with a few shoppers reporting that some stores were unable to\nprocess credit card purchases.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saturday’s approximately two-hour long outage affected all\nTarget stores and was caused by an error made during regular system\nmaintenance, said Target spokeswoman Jenna Reck.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sunday’s issue was unrelated, caused by an issue at\nvendor NCR, Target said in a statement. It was not widespread like on\nSaturday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWhile this was not an issue within Target\u2019s technology\nsystem, Target was unable to process select card payments at some stores for\nabout 90 minutes,\u201d Target\u2019s statement said. \u201cThe issue is now resolved and\npayments are going through normally.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There were reports on social media of some stores not being\nable to process payments except with cash or check, but fewer complaints than\nSaturday’s outage, which had more than 5,000 reports on Downdetector.com.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cAlthough this was unrelated to Saturday\u2019s issue, we know\nmany guests had a frustrating shopping experience in our stores this weekend.\nFor that, we are truly sorry,\u201d Target said in the statement. \u201cWe never want to\ndisappoint any guests and we\u2019re working tirelessly to ensure these issues don\u2019t\nhappen again.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Like with Saturday\u2019s incident, Target said \u201cthis was not a\nsecurity-related issue and no payment information was compromised at any time.\u201d\nSaturday’s statement also confirmed the outage was “not a data\nbreach.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Regular maintenance<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Eric Schmidt, the chief information security officer at Butler University in Indianapolis, wasn’t surprised to learn that the outage was related to\u00a0maintenance<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWeekends are a normal maintenance time for most IT shops,\u201d\nSchmidt said. \u201cRetail is different especially with stores being open seven days\na week.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, Schmidt said, even a simple upgrade doesn\u2019t\ngo as planned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt\u2019s one of those things that happens, unfortunately,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Target’s last widespread register outage happened June 15,\n2014, exactly five years to the day of Saturday’s issue. Reck said the 2014\noutage was related to a network issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Target.com and other Target systems were unaffected\nduring Saturday’s outage, Reck confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
