Lillie, who had been speaking through a bullhorn, was charged with violating a city ordinance that forbids using a device to amplify one\u2019s voice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"13-Year-Old Arrested Pro-Choice Protest in Lakeland\" width=\"1110\" height=\"624\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/TQEC87JriLo?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lillie\u2019s mother, Lauren Johnson, recorded part of the incident on her phone and later posted the video on social media. It drew the attention of Florida Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, who is running for governor as a Democrat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Fried tweeted: \u201cI&#8217;m posting this with her mother&#8217;s permission because I need everyone to see what Ron DeSantis\u2019 Florida really looks like. 13-year-olds being arrested for protesting for their own freedom.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"440\" height=\"305\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 440px) 100vw, 440px\" src=\"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/fried.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-30421\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/fried.png 440w, https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/fried-300x208.png 300w\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/NikkiFried\/status\/1544069706570764296\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">The tweet<\/a>&nbsp;had generated more than 9,000 comments and 31,000 retweets as of Tuesday afternoon. Fried followed up&nbsp;Tuesday at 12:15 p.m. by tweeting, \u201cFlorida doesn&#8217;t have to be like this. This young woman is an inspiration. Lillie, who identifies as nonbinary, said they were left bruised by the officers\u2019 handling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The teen joined their mother and two of their four siblings at the Munn Park event.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Violation of the ordinance is a second-degree misdemeanor. City code lists the maximum penalty as 60 days in jail and a $500 fine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">LPD spokesperson Robin Tillett said Tuesday that reports and affidavits involving juveniles are exempt from public-records laws.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lillie wore shorts and a crop top and a cape in pink, purple and blue, the colors of bisexuality. The teen carried an American flag and a rainbow flag for LGBTQ pride.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the video, Johnson can be heard calling out, \u201cLillie, don\u2019t resist, honey. It\u2019s OK. I got you.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lillie said the officers didn\u2019t use handcuffs until reaching the police station. Johnson said officers released Lillie with a notice to appear in court on Aug. 9, <strong>but as of Tuesday, the court appearance had been canceled.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Johnson said LPD told her the case had been referred to the State Attorney\u2019s Office for the 10th Judicial Circuit.
