A family tradition at\nthe SUN \u2018n FUN Expo Campus<\/a>, WINGS \u2018n THINGS<\/a> has been reimagined! With exciting hands-on activities that\nintroduce tomorrow\u2019s technologies, children of all ages will be given a free\nintroduction to the wonders of Aerospace. Offered through the Aerospace Center for Excellence (ACE)<\/a>, this year\u2019s event is being co-hosted with\nthe Women in Aviation Lakeland Chapter<\/a> in celebration of Girls in Aviation Day, a\nWomen in Aviation International Event. Numerous hands-on STEM (Science,\nTechnology, Engineering and Math) activities are planned such as stomp rocket\nlaunches, weather studies, solar observations, drone demonstrations, and a tour\nof a REAL a Boeing 727! Adding to these super fun experiences, kids can climb\naboard a real Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting (ARFF) Truck, courtesy of the Lakeland Fire Department<\/a>, help build a real aircraft with the Lakeland Aero Club<\/a>, and take advantage of mentorship mini-sessions with\nnotable women in Aerospace Careers. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For participants between\nthe ages of 8-17, WINGS \u2018n THINGS<\/a> has a special offer! Young aspiring pilots are invited\nto sit in the copilot\u2019s seat and take off for a flight in a real\nairplane! Children may have flown in a commercial\naircraft, but that doesn\u2019t come close to the exhilaration of\nflight they can experience from the front seat. EAA Chapter\n454 is hosting these Young Eagle Flights at no\ncost, giving children the experience of a\nlifetime. Kids will get real flight time and\neven their very own logbook! Flights are limited to the first 60 eligible\nregistrants the day of the event and offered on a first come, first served\nbasis, so arrive early to reserve your slot! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If all that\u2019s\nnot enough, ACE\u2019s own Florida Air Museum, the Official Aviation Museum for the\nState of Florida,<\/a> will\nbe welcoming visitors to participate in a scavenger hunt for fun prizes. Many\nof the activities throughout the event will have\ntake-home souvenir projects like balsa gliders and more. The\nMuseum is also located on the SUN \u2018n FUN Expo Campus,<\/a> and admission is free during WINGS \u2018n THINGS! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Just last weekend, ACE\nhosted Classroom to the Sky<\/a>, during which 60 teachers from across the state\nparticipated in a day-long seminar and learned ways to infuse STEM into their\nclass curriculum. NOAA<\/a> representatives\nwere on-hand for the welcome keynote, discussing their role\nin determining weather patterns, and award-winning educators led\ngrade-specific breakout sessions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Teachers had their\nown hands-on learning lesson given by ACE students, who taught them\nto rivet their own aluminum binders with the\nsame techniques used to build aircraft. Teachers agreed the\nhighlight of the day was taking an actual flight themselves, and\nthey were thrilled when many of their pilots were high\nschool or college students who earned their pilot license through ACE\u2019s\nscholarship program. Teachers earned In-service points for taking part in\nthe day\u2019s session. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
