{"id":32221,"date":"2023-05-16T20:48:14","date_gmt":"2023-05-17T00:48:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/?p=32221"},"modified":"2023-05-16T20:48:18","modified_gmt":"2023-05-17T00:48:18","slug":"polk-county-drills-two-new-super-wells-to-prevent-water-supply-shortage-as-population-booms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/2023\/05\/16\/polk-county-drills-two-new-super-wells-to-prevent-water-supply-shortage-as-population-booms\/","title":{"rendered":"Polk County drills two new super wells to prevent water supply shortage as population booms"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Enough good, clean drinking water is a huge concern in&nbsp;Polk County&nbsp;because of the county\u2019s booming population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The new Polk Regional Water Cooperative wants to make sure that never happens as Polk is one of the fastest-growing counties in the entire country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"932\" height=\"524\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1110px) 100vw, 1110px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/water-drilling.webp?resize=932%2C524&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32222\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">So, the agency is drilling two new super wells, one east of&nbsp;Lake Wales, the other in&nbsp;Lakeland&nbsp;off Kathleen Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They will penetrate two or three times deeper than the wells residents currently rely on, which tap into the upper Florida Aquifer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Unlike water from the upper aquifer, which is immediately drinkable, water from the lower portion is salty. The sodium chloride and calcium sulfate have to be removed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;We\u2019ll use reverse osmosis, which is a very common process around the world,&#8221; said Eric DeHaven, Executive Director of the Polk Regional Water Cooperative. &#8220;In fact, many municipalities along coastal Florida have reverse osmosis treatment plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Lake Wales site is expected to provide water from the lower aquifer in about four years.
