Gov. Ron DeSantis\u2019 office called out the Walt Disney Company for \u201ccorporate propaganda\u201d by its announcement of the cancellation of a $1 billion Lake Nona campus plan in Orlando to \u201cdistract\u201d from the closure of one of their resorts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser, which opened on March 1, 2022, will close<\/a> in late September of this year. It will have only operated for around 18 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The resort is one of the most costly options for families looking to stay at Walt Disney World in Central Florida, clocking in at nearly $5,000 per couple and around $6,000 for a family of four<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThis entire story was just corporate propaganda to distract from their failed $6000 two-night Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser experiment,\u201d Jeremy Redfern, press secretary for DeSantis, said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWho would have thought that $6000 for a two-night stay was unaffordable for most families?\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Redfern also responded to criticisms<\/a> that business is on a downturn in Florida in comparison to New York.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cHow business is going in Florida \u2013 7% increase in total nonfarm employees since Jan 2020. How it\u2019s going in NY and NYC: 1.3% decrease and 0.6% decrease in total nonfarm employees since Jan 2020, respectively,\u201d Redfern said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNet domestic migration 2021-2022- Florida: +318,855 NY: -299,557.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings blamed<\/a> the lack of an \u201cinclusive\u201d environment for the cancellation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is unfortunate that Disney will not be moving forward with construction of the Lake Nona campus,\u201d Demings, a Democrat, said. \u201cHowever, these are the consequences when there isn\u2019t an inclusive and collaborative work environment between the state of Florida and the business community.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe will continue to work closely with our valued partners at Disney,\u201d Demings said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DeSantis\u2019 office\u00a0responded<\/a>\u00a0to the news, saying the \u201cpossibility\u201d of the project was brought up two years ago, and \u201cnothing ever came\u201d of it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThe state was unsure whether it would come to fruition,\u201d they said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cGiven the company\u2019s financial straits, falling market cap, and declining stock price, it is unsurprising that they would restructure their business operations and cancel unsuccessful ventures.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The actions were limited to the Lake Nona campus, which would also have relocated Californian employees, and a Disney official noted that plans for $17 billion of investments in Walt Disney World remain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ongoing lawsuits with Disney and DeSantis are over Florida\u2019s nullification of the company\u2019s last-minute, far-reaching agreements that granted them considerable power over the district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Disney alleged<\/a> that the governor-appointed board is engaging in a \u201ctargeted campaign of government retaliation\u201d that would threaten \u201cDisney\u2019s business operations, jeopardizes its economic future in the region, and violates its constitutional rights.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

They described the board\u2019s vote to commence nullification of Disney\u2019s far-reaching agreements that occurred before the new board was appointed, as the \u201clast strike.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

DeSantis\u2019 office previously responded to the lawsuit, saying Disney has no \u201clegal right\u201d to \u201coperate its own government or maintain special privileges not held by other businesses in the state.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
