{"id":32423,"date":"2023-05-26T15:28:09","date_gmt":"2023-05-26T19:28:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/?p=32423"},"modified":"2023-05-26T15:28:13","modified_gmt":"2023-05-26T19:28:13","slug":"lake-hollingsworth-aquatic-plant-harvesting-project","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/2023\/05\/26\/lake-hollingsworth-aquatic-plant-harvesting-project\/","title":{"rendered":"LAKE HOLLINGSWORTH AQUATIC PLANT HARVESTING PROJECT"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The City of Lakeland\u2019s Lakes &amp; Stormwater Division will begin an Aquatic Plant Harvesting project in Lake Hollingsworth to reduce dense vegetation in portions of the lake.\u00a0 The main objective of this project is to minimize the volume of invasive and nuisance aquatic plant species, promote plant diversity for habitat improvement, open drainage corridors for improved water flow, and enhance water quality through the removal of aquatic plants.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 276px) 100vw, 276px\" src=\"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/download-7.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-32424\" width=\"425\" height=\"280\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The first phase of the project will have staff focusing on the southern portion of the lake from Patten Heights Street to Crystal Lake Drive. The City has obtained all required permits through the Florida Fish and Wildlife Commission for the removal of specific aquatic plant species and volume. The project involves utilizing the City\u2019s specialized aquatic harvesting machinery and barges to cut and transport the vegetation to shore.\u00a0 Harvested vegetation will be transported to a permitted facility for composting.\u00a0 The cost of the project is estimated at $25,000 and is funded through the Stormwater Utility Fund.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Throughout the project, Lakes and Stormwater staff will be utilizing the City operated parking lot on the south side of the lake, located at the intersection of Lake Hollingsworth Drive and Buckingham Avenue, resulting in the temporary closing of three trailer spaces.
