It seems like it’s always been here and easy to overlook among all the new and exciting liqueurs. Amaretto is an absolute staple in my personal liquor cabinet. I can always talk myself into an Amaretto Sour pretty much any day of the week.

Amaretto made its way to the states in the 1960s but was first created in Italy over a hundred years ago. With many legends surrounding its origins, it is impossible to pinpoint which one is true and which is a pile of spazzatura (garbage). This liqueur is prized for its sweet taste of almonds as well as its slight bitterness. The sweetness varies from one brand to another, and you might detect notes of herbs and spices in a few. Premium amaretto’s tend to be less sugary than many of the cheaper options. The point being that all Amaretto’s are not created equal, so I encourage you to sample a variety of brands whenever you can.

So, how much almond is actually in amaretto? The short answer is, not much (if any). Though amaretto is thought of as an almond-flavored liqueur, most quality amaretto’s are flavored with the pits of apricots. The flavor is often from an extract added to a base liqueur, usually brandy and aged for a minimum of 3 years. Some amaretto’s infuse or distill other botanicals, such as vanilla and of course almonds along with peach pits, into the liqueur. They’re often sweetened with dark or burnt sugar and that gives the liqueur its dark amber color.

The Amaretto Toasted Almond is a unique way to enjoy Amaretto in a desert cocktail. As always, I will throw some variations at ya. For example, this recipe calls for heavy cream, but I personally prefer unsweetened extra thick oat milk. Coconut milk is also a great option.

We usually invite Kahlua to join us at the Amaretto party but before we commit to Kahlua, I would recommend you try Starbucks liqueur. Starbucks liqueur is so silky smooth, made with real black coffee, sweet butter and roasted chestnuts making it the perfect pairing for this recipe.

Ingredients

1 ounce* vodka

1 ounce amaretto

½ ounce Kahlua (or other coffee liqueur like Starbucks)

1 ½ ounces heavy cream

Freshly grated nutmeg, optional

Instructions

Add the vodka, amaretto, Kahlua and cream to a cocktail shaker.
