The gypsum is\nmounded up and retained across the street from the plant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When the groundwater surrounding the pile was tested at\nseveral sites earlier this year, the&nbsp;level&nbsp;of arsenic was 2.8-times\nhigher than what the federal government considers acceptable. The level of\nlithium was triple the government\u2019s standards.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"505\" height=\"341\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 505px) 100vw, 505px\" src=\"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Screenshot-18.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-3370\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Screenshot-18.png 505w, https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Screenshot-18-300x203.png 300w\" \/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe testing so far is showing nothing is moving\noff-site&nbsp;and it is all contained here,\u201d Catheryn Lacy, spokesperson for\nLakeland Electric, told FOX 13.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lacy said&nbsp;the contamination has not reached surrounding\nponds on the power company\u2019s property or made it into the aquifer, however,\nGolder Associates, an&nbsp;engineering&nbsp;firm that is monitoring the\nsituation, said the problem should be corrected \u201cas soon as feasible.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sean McGinnis, who&nbsp;monitors&nbsp;water for Lakeland\nElectric, said the company will probably take the next few months to find the\nbest way to stop the chemicals from seeping out in the first place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThen once the best option is determined, implementing it,\ndepending on what the option is, could take a few months to a couple of years\nto complete,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lakeland Electric&nbsp;plans&nbsp;to close down the McIntosh\nwithin the next five years.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Story by Fox 13 Lakeland Electric says routine testing&nbsp;indicates toxic chemicals are seeping into the groundwater around its C.D.&nbsp;McIntosh&nbsp;power.
