On July 19, 2023, at 5:24 pm officers were called to the 1300 block of E. Memorial Blvd., Lakeland, in reference to Wanted Subject, Luis Guillermo Rojas Araujo. Rojas Araujo had an arrest warrant from the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office for 1st Degree of Attempted Murder, Firearm Possession, Aggravated Battery Causing Great Bodily Harm, Discharge of a Firearm in Public, and Discharge of a Firearm from a Vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Information was received that Rojas Araujo had been living in an apartment at the location and that Rojas had made statements of “suicide by cop”. Using an abundance of caution, LPD officers established a perimeter and used a vehicle PA to call out to Rojas to exit the building. When Rojas Araujo did not respond, members of the SWAT Team, along with the Crisis Negotiation Team responded to assist. Officers continued attempts to contact Rojas Araujo and were eventually successful. At 10:06 pm Rojas Araujo exited the apartment and was taken into custody. We commend our members who worked hard to bring about a peaceful resolution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the morning of July 16, 2023, at 5:44 a.m., the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office responded to an initial crash at East Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and Leanne Avenue intersection. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a male victim and a motorcycle lying in the roadway east of Leanne Avenue. Deputies determined that the victim had sustained multiple gunshot wounds. Hillsborough County Fire Rescue (HCFR) responded and transported the victim to Tampa General Hospital (TGH) for medical attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Using investigative means, police identified Luis Rojas Araujo, 50, as the suspect. They obtained an arrest warrant charging him with Attempted 1st Degree Murder along with other offenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On July 19, 2023, a tip came in that Rojas Araujo was in Lakeland. Lakeland Police Department (LPD) initiated surveillance of the suspect’s location, resulting in his arrest after negotiating with him over the phone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
