Sinead O\u2019Connor, the trailblazing Irish artist and \u201cNothing Compares 2 U\u201d hitmaker, has died, according to a family statement obtained by the BBC<\/a>. She was 56.<\/p>\n\n\n

The vocalist\u2019s cause of death has not yet been revealed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The news comes more than a year after O\u2019Connor\u2019s 17-year-old son, Shane, died by suicide in January 2022. The singer posted a series of troubling messages to her Twitter account in the weeks following his death, writing, \u201cI\u2019ve decided to follow my son. There\u2019s no point living without him.\u201d Shane was one of O\u2019Connor\u2019s four children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

O\u2019Connor released her debut album, \u201cThe Lion and the Cobra\u201d in 1987, and three years later, shot to worldwide fame with her sophomore effort \u201cI Do Not Want What I Haven\u2019t Got.\u201d The album was bolstered by lead single \u201cNothing Compares 2 U,\u201d a cover of Prince\u2019s 1985 song.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Her version of the ballad spent four weeks at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart, and was nominated for two Grammy Awards including record of the year and best female pop vocal performance. It was accompanied by a now-iconic music video of O\u2019Connor in tight closeup singing directly into the camera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The singer endured enormous fallout from her 1992 \u201cSaturday Night Live\u201d appearance, in which she tore up a picture of Pope John Paul II while singing Bob Marley’s “War,” in protest of child sex abuse in the Catholic Church. Religious groups burned her albums, radio stations pulled her songs, and she was loudly booed during a performance at Madison Square Garden weeks later.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But O\u2019Connor expressed no regrets about controversial \u201cSNL\u201d moment, later calling it the \u201cproudest\u201d moment of her career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“They all thought I should be made a mockery of for throwing my career down the drain,\u201d O’Connor said in \u201cNothing Compares,\u201d a documentary about her life released last year. \u201cI didn\u2019t say I wanted to be a pop star. It didn\u2019t suit me to be a pop star. So I didn\u2019t throw away any career that I wanted. It didn\u2019t change my attitude.” <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
