It didn\u2019t really catch on in the rest of the country until the newly crowned Queen Margherita paid a visit to the seaside town in 1889. One night,\u00a0the legend goes, she grew tired of fancy meals and asked for some local cuisine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1110px) 100vw, 1110px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/1.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-34449\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/1.jpg?resize=1024%2C683&amp;ssl=1 1024w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/1.jpg?resize=300%2C200&amp;ssl=1 300w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/1.jpg?resize=768%2C512&amp;ssl=1 768w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/1.jpg?w=1200&amp;ssl=1 1200w\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pizza chef Raffaele Esposito made the queen three pizzas, including what we know now as the Margherita pizza \u2014 tomato, basil, and mozzarella for the three colors of the Italian flag \u2014 and hand-delivered them. Legend has it the queen took one bite of that pizza and said it was one of the best things she had ever eaten, which is how it got its name.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s entirely possible that more informal pizza delivery happened in town before this, but it\u2019s certainly the first one that went down in history. There is\u00a0<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/recipes.howstuffworks.com\/5-things-didnt-know-about-pizza.htm?utm_source=howstuffworks&amp;utm_medium=recirc\" target=\"_blank\">some controversy<\/a>\u00a0about whether this story is actually true, but regardless, the pizzeria where\u00a0Esposito worked, Pizzeria Brandi,\u00a0still displays a royal thank-you note on its walls.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In 1880s Naples, pizza was a staple food for the working class, although the nobility turned up their noses at it.
