On October 6, 1964, a joint resolution of Congress was signed into law authorizing the President of the United States to proclaim October 15th of each year as “White Cane Safety Day. The White Cane Law was created to ensure the right to travel independently using a white cane or guide dog wherever a person who is Blind or has visual impairments chooses to go. The white cane, in addition to being a practical mobility tool, serves as a symbol of dignity, freedom, and independence for individuals who are Blind or have visual impairments. On White Cane Safety Day, our nation celebrates the immeasurable contributions individuals who are Blind and have visual impairments have made, as valued members of our diverse country. The City of Lakeland has made a commitment to greater accessibility for all citizens and visitors, and will continue to strive to provide accessible programs and services to the community. The Lakeland Alliance for Accessibility will continue to support the City\u2019s efforts to enhance accessibility for all citizens and visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Near drowning at Carlton Arms, 15 y\/o drowned, 16 y\/0 Jacob Solis and Justin Perez pulled the victim out of the water. Justin who had taken CPR classes knew that the patient needed CPR and began CPR. The boy began breathing and was transported to a nearby hospital.
