Orange St. and turn its principal use into a surface-level parking lot in the city&#8217;s downtown core.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Commissioner Bill Read asked if a Publix representative was present at Monday&#8217;s meeting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read wanted to know if Publix was willing to make a commitment to allow the future parking lot to be available to the city for public use &#8211; perhaps on evenings, weekends, or special events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The city will require Publix to construct a minimum 4,000-square-foot pedestrian plaza with public seating at the northwest corner, along the intersection of E. Orange Street and Massachusetts Avenue. The company will have to preserve the existing trees around the perimeter of the lot and protect them from demolition activities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Publix will use the site in conjunction with&nbsp;the former FedEx building, which it acquired in June 2022, and its existing Kentucky Avenue offices to create a technology campus in downtown.&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>After 14 months, Publix Super Markets Inc. got approval to demolish the former Florida Citrus Mutual building and turn it into a parking lot.
