{"id":35408,"date":"2023-09-01T16:01:10","date_gmt":"2023-09-01T20:01:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/?p=35408"},"modified":"2023-09-01T16:01:19","modified_gmt":"2023-09-01T20:01:19","slug":"two-teens-die-in-crash-with-tractor-trailer-on-rain-soaked-recker-highway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/2023\/09\/01\/two-teens-die-in-crash-with-tractor-trailer-on-rain-soaked-recker-highway\/","title":{"rendered":"Two teens die in crash with tractor-trailer on rain-soaked Recker Highway"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Two Polk County men, ages 18 and 19, died Thursday afternoon when their car lost traction on rain-soaked Recker Highway and hit an oncoming semi tractor-trailer,&nbsp;the Polk County Sheriff&#8217;s Office&nbsp;said Friday morning.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"660\" height=\"439\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" src=\"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/recker-hwy-near-commercial-blvd-08-31-23.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35409\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The crash happened at about 2:20 p.m. at 5155 Recker Highway, near Commercial Boulevard. The Sheriff&#8217;s Office said that, according to video and witness statements, a 2016 Buick La Crosse driven by Cameron Williams, 19, of Auburndale was heading north when it hit a large puddle and began to spin. The car spun into the path of a 2013 Kenworth semi-tractor with a 53-foot Coca-Cola trailer driven south by Orlando Velez, 61, of Riverview.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The truck struck the car&#8217;s passenger side, and both vehicles left the west side of the road and hit a utility pole. The passenger in the Buick, Neil Bryant II, 18, of Winter Haven, was ejected.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">First responders from the Sheriff&#8217;s Office and Polk County Fire Rescue found Williams and Bryant dead at the scene.
