It was around 5 p.m. when Josaury Faneite-Diglio got a notification from her security camera and saw that a bear known locally as Tripod was paying a visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Faneite-Diglio&#8217;s 13-year-old son, Joseph, was home to capture the encounter on his cellphone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">One in a lifetime<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Home-security video shows Joseph quieting the family dog Bruno, who had alerted him to Tripod&#8217;s presence. Joseph recognized the locally famous bear almost immediately.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;He&#8217;s coming close. This guy&#8217;s trying to eat the food here,&#8221; Joseph said as he filmed, releasing a string of expletives as he narrates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Oh my god,&#8221; he said. &#8220;This is like, one in a lifetime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I feel like I gotta lock all the doors now,&#8221; he says as Tripod slowly hobbles through toward the window where Joseph is filming. &#8220;I&#8217;ve never been this close to a bear.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Taking the booze<\/p>\n\n\n\n<center><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"USATODAY-Embed Player\" width=\"540\" height=\"350\" frameborder=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\" allowfullscreen=\"true\" marginheight=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" src=\"https:\/\/uw-media.usatoday.com\/embed\/video\/8391391001?placement=snow-embed\"><\/iframe>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Joseph continues filming while Tripod makes his way to the mini-fridge. To Joseph&#8217;s surprise, he opens the fridge door with no trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Oh, look, he just opened the door!&#8221; Joseph says, laughing. &#8220;He&#8217;s about to take the beer!&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"300\" height=\"400\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" src=\"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/70765796007-4-da-46-c-98614-f-46-b-391617-ef-23-c-65-f-00-b.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-35570\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">By the time Tripod left, he drank three White Claw hard seltzers, paired with some fish food the family leaves out by a fish tank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;I was not scared&nbsp;because we know the bear really well,&#8221; she told the station. &#8220;He lives here; we respect their habitat as much as we can.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Bears in Florida?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Yes, there are bears in Florida.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They can be found&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/myfwc.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/webappviewer\/index.html?id=0c634d5ba4cc47baa82de0ed2782426c\">almost anywhere in the state<\/a>&nbsp;but prefer to be in areas of flatwoods, swamps, scrub oak ridges, and hammock habitats, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They look for places in cover and try to stay away from heavily populated areas. But Central Florida and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/myfwc.com\/wildlifehabitats\/wildlife\/bear\/living\/distribution-map\/\">Lake Mary fall in one of the regions that the commission considers &#8220;frequent&#8221; for bear visits<\/a>&nbsp;based on observations by researchers, public calls for help and sightings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those areas are considered core to the bear population and show evidence that reproduction is consistent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Officials urge the public to avoid feeding bears, as it can increase their comfort with humans and put them at further risk.
