Facts about the Lakeland Fiber Network<\/strong> 1) approximately\n85% aerial and 15% underground 2) it cost nearly 200k a year to operate\ncurrently 3) Currently the City leases dark fiber to Lakeland Regional Health,\nCenturyLink, FiberLight, Polk County Sheriff, Polk County Tax Collector, Mid\nFlorida Credit Union, Nap of Central Florida, Alternative Choice Wireless,\nFDOT, Polk County Schools   4) The City\u2019s dark fiber license fee is\n$100 per fiber per mile per month. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The City of Lakeland does not need to be in the internet, tv, and phone business when there are so many other opportunities to become a \u201cSMART\u201d city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Lakeland Gazette get to email and sit down and talk some\nof the smartest people we have ever meet and the conclusion is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I would tell Commissioners that if they want to create a “Smart City” infrastructure, then they need to do more than fiber.\u00a0 They will need to provide wireless connectivity as well.\u00a0 Fiber backbone is required in any case, but planning should include accessing what fiber is already present and what wireless coverage could be overlaid over the existing fiber.\u00a0 Then based on targeted business parks, tech hubs, education centers, residential developments, etc\u2026 they can plan out pilot programs to provide wireless services and extend fiber when and where required.\u00a0 By changing the \u201clast mile\u201d (term only, could be feet) structure they can reduce cost, time to install\/implement and increase resiliency of the network architecture.\u00a0 It would also allow for people to pay for the install if they want service instead of ALL residents paying whether they use it or not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, all residents would use the wireless overlay and\nexisting fiber backbone, if there was wireless connectivity.  This is\nbecause the wireless infrastructure would allow:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

  1. Connected\nvehicles for safety and traffic management\/flow\/navigation<\/li>
  2. 3-way\ncommunications between cars, intersections and pedestrians to increase flow and\nsafety<\/li>
  3. City\nnetwork for residential wireless connectivity (would allow citizens to reduce\ntheir cellular data plans while also providing a possible revenue stream to\nLakeland, about $12M annually)<\/li>
  4. City\nnetwork for Police, Fire, EMT, 1st responders to communicate securely\nacross departments as well as with people in need, victims and survivors<\/li>
  5. Off-Grid\nnetwork for when the power goes out and the grid goes down.  Communications,\nmanagement and triage would remain operational through mobile devices, vehicles\nand solar powered wireless infrastructure<\/li>
  6. More\ndata, more places.  Wireless allows you to take the throughput of the\nfiber backbone and bring it out of the light strand and into the operational\nenvironment.  This allows you to push and pull data to support crowded\nevents, cover outages due to fiber being cut, damaged or failing, so the city\nalways maintains connectivity.<\/li>
  7. Serves\ndisadvantaged and education.  Enables the city to provide free wireless\nconnectivity to areas in need and places of learning.  Without the high\ncost of laying fiber to every home.<\/li>
  8. Enables\n5G employment and autonomous operations of planes, trains, automobiles and\ndrones.<\/li><\/ol>\n\n\n\n

    Long story short, we should execute a combination of fiber\nand wireless technologies to create a smart city infrastructure that would\nincrease our technical capabilities, safety, education and economic development\nto the City of Lakeland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

    Thinking outside the current proposal could save millions of\ntaxpayer\u2019s dollars and provide so much more to the future of Lakeland.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
