The $2.2 Million project funded by the City of Lakeland will take approximately nine months to complete.\u00a0 The work is being done by Gibbs &amp; Register, a company that specializes in complex construction projects.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ryan Lazenby, Civil Engineer Manager said, \u201cThe primary reason for the project is to increase intersection capacity and specifically to eliminate vehicles from backing into George Jenkins Boulevard (SR 600) when waiting at the intersection traffic signal.&nbsp; Once completed the roundabout will reduce intersection delays, improve safety, and serve as a gateway feature to the Downtown West area.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Studies show that roundabouts offer significant safety enhancements and typically result in 90% fewer fatalities and 75% fewer injuries when compared to signalized intersections.&nbsp; The roundabout will reduce long-term maintenance costs because electric power for signal operations and signal equipment will be eliminated at the intersection once the project is completed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Nearby businesses will remain open during construction and a signed detour route will be in place during all phases of the project to least impact traffic.
