Fabian Basabe, R-Miami Beach,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.flsenate.gov\/Session\/Bill\/2024\/167\/BillText\/Filed\/PDF\">filed<\/a>&nbsp;a bill this week that aims to repeal the state constitution\u2019s definition of a legal union of marriage.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"208\" height=\"279\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 208px) 100vw, 208px\" src=\"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Rep.-Fabian-Basabe-R-Miami-Beach.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-37496\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Rep. Fabian Basabe, R-Miami Beach<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Titled \u201cRepeal of Marriage Definition,\u201d the bill specified removing the provision defining marriage as between only one man and only one woman as husband and wife.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The legislation, HR 167, would also \u201cinvalidate\u201d any other legal union that is treated as marriage or its equivalent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under the state constitution, Florida\u2019s legal union of marriage is listed under Article I Section 27.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">If the legislature approved the bill, the change would be presented to Florida voters for approval or rejection on the ballot at the next general or special election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">District 106,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ballotpedia.org\/Florida_House_of_Representatives_District_106\">represented<\/a>&nbsp;by Basabe, covers much of Miami Beach. The area includes North Bay Village, Sunny Isles Beach, and Surfside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Basabe defeated Democratic candidate Jordan Leonard by just 240 votes during the November midterm elections. Overall, Basabe garnered 50.2% of the vote to Leonard\u2019s 49.8% out of over 52,500 ballots cast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Same-sex marriage was&nbsp;legalized&nbsp;across the country by the Supreme Court in 2015. The landmark ruling was a part of&nbsp;Obergefell v. Hodges&nbsp;after same-sex couples challenged and sued state agencies in Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and Tennessee on their bans of same-sex marriage.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Rep.
