{"id":37583,"date":"2023-10-22T09:48:00","date_gmt":"2023-10-22T13:48:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/?p=37583"},"modified":"2023-10-21T22:53:25","modified_gmt":"2023-10-22T02:53:25","slug":"update-aldi-agrees-to-purchase-winn-dixie-fresco-y-mas-to-be-spun-off","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/2023\/10\/22\/update-aldi-agrees-to-purchase-winn-dixie-fresco-y-mas-to-be-spun-off\/","title":{"rendered":"Update: Aldi agrees to purchase Winn-Dixie; Fresco y M\u00e1s to be spun off"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Harvey\u2019s Supermarket stores to also be sold<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">German grocery giant Aldi has agreed to purchase Florida-based supermarket chain Winn-Dixie, according to an announcement from Southeastern Grocers, the latter\u2019s parent company.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"609\" height=\"338\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 609px) 100vw, 609px\" src=\"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot-42-14.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-37584\" srcset=\"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot-42-14.png 609w, https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/10\/Screenshot-42-14-300x167.png 300w\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It\u2019s part of a \u201ccomprehensive strategic divestiture\u201d of Southeastern Grocers, which has stores located in Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Mississippi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The company, headquartered in Jacksonville, is also selling its Harvey\u2019s Supermarkets stores to Aldi. Four-hundred stores in total will be sold to Aldi, according to the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After the sale, stores will continue to operate under their current Winn-Dixie and Harvey\u2019s formats, the company said, but Aldi \u201cwill also evaluate which locations will convert\u201d to its no-frills format.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cFor those stores that are not converted, ALDI intends for them to continue to operate as Winn-Dixie and Harvey\u2019s Supermarket stores,\u201d the company said in a news release.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Not going to Aldi, however, are the company\u2019s Fresco y M\u00e1s stores.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead, the chain, which caters to Hispanic customers and has a large presence in Miami-Dade County, will be spun off into its own company, Fresco Retail Group, LLC.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Upon independence, the 28-store chain will \u201ccontinue operating its stores and pharmacies as they are presently,\u201d the news release states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The merger is expected to close in the first half of 2024, subject to regulatory approvals and other closing conditions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cSEG will continue to operate its respective banners and stores in the normal course of business up to and until the transactions are completed,\u201d its news release states.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Financial terms of the deal weren\u2019t disclosed in the news release Wednesday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Aldi was founded in 1946 in Germany.
