Florida Southern College athletics continues to promote student-athlete success in the classroom as the department earned a Division II Academic Succes Rate (ASR) of 90 for the 2012 six-year cohort, the NCAA released on Wednesday. The 90 percent mark is tied for the highest mark the department has ever earned, with the previous record set during the 2010 cohort. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Academic success is at the core of our culture here at Florida Southern,” director of athletics and dean of wellness Drew Howard said. “We continue to be proud of our student-athletes and the work that they put into their education.”<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Moccasins have the 28th highest ASR and are firmly in the top 10 percent of Division II institutions. Since the formation of the ASR, the athletic department has never dropped below 80 percent. The average ASR for Florida Southern since 2009 is 88.5 percent. The Moccasins earned the fourth-best ASR in the conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Sunshine State Conference as a whole continues to lead all of Division II in both athletic and academic success with the second-highest Academic Success Rate of 86. The SSC has ranked first or second every year that the ASR has been available. Over the same period, member institutions have won a combined 49 team and 66 individual national titles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The NCAA developed the Academic Success Rate (ASR) in 2006 and measures the percentage of student-athletes who graduate within six years of initial enrollment in college and includes all Division II student-athletes, including transfers and those not receiving athletic scholarships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ASR reveals student-athlete graduation rates that are much higher than those recorded by the federal methodology. The federal rate for the 2012 entering class of student-athletes was 61-percent, compared to 52-percent for the general student body of that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
