Drivers in Lakeland are frustrated over the ongoing construction on West Pipkin Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The widening project there started more than two years ago.<\/p>\n\n\n

At the Lakeland Barber Company on Pipkin Road and Yates Road, the road work is often the topic of conversation in the barber chair.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cCustomers hate it,\u201d said barber Dayton White. \u201cEverybody hates it. You hear about it all of the time.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

White, a Lakeland native, says the complaints are like many you\u2019d hear about any major project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That includes detours in the middle of the night, lots of noise, and traffic delays during rush hour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Some are skeptical that the project will be worth it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI think it will be just how it was with two lanes,\u201d White said. \u201cIt\u2019s still going to be just as busy because they\u2019re adding more people so it\u2019s not going to change much,\u201d White said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Polk County and the city of Lakeland started the widening project there in August 2021. The road is going from two lanes to four lanes between South Florida Avenue and Medulla Road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The county started the project as Lakeland continues to grow, especially along the stretch of Pipkin Road by the airport.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Despite some of the construction frustration, officials say the $55 million project is on schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
