We gathered at Kathleen High this morning to dedicate the school\u2019s Freshman Academy building in honor of the late Johnnie Jackson, Jr.<\/p>\n\n\n

Jackson served as KHS\u2019 principal before passing away from cancer in 2021. He was 47.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He worked for Polk County Public Schools for nearly 20 years, serving as a teacher and administrator before landing the principal\u2019s job at KHS \u2014 his alma mater \u2014 in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

<\/a>Jackson was a first-generation college student. After his passing, KHS and Jackson\u2019s family established a scholarship in his name to help support other first-generation college students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This morning\u2019s event was well-attended by friends, family members, colleagues and KHS alumni. Jackson\u2019s widow, Sybille Oldham-Jackson, called it \u201ca wonderful celebration.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt was a reminder of his kindness, his intelligence, and the unwavering Kathleen spirit and pride he possessed,\u201d said Oldham-Jackson, who is the principal at Lakeland Highlands Middle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
