{"id":38278,"date":"2023-11-03T11:22:10","date_gmt":"2023-11-03T15:22:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/?p=38278"},"modified":"2023-11-03T11:22:17","modified_gmt":"2023-11-03T15:22:17","slug":"lfd-takes-future-steps-in-preventing-radio-failures","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/2023\/11\/03\/lfd-takes-future-steps-in-preventing-radio-failures\/","title":{"rendered":"LFD takes future steps in preventing &#8220;radio failures&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lakeland Fire Department has taken immediate actions to prevent further &#8220;radio failure&#8221; during potential critical moments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to a memorandum sent to all fire department personnel by Assistant Chief of Operations Harley Wilson III, LFD has deployed a mobile radio repeater in one of its two battalion chief vehicles as of Oct. 23.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"248\" height=\"203\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 248px) 100vw, 248px\" src=\"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/download-3.jpeg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-38279\" style=\"aspect-ratio:1.2216748768472907;width:446px;height:auto\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The use of mobile radio repeaters has become a hot topic between the fire department and the Lakeland Professional Firefighters Local 4173 union. Shannon Turbeville, president of the firefighters union,&nbsp;called for the city to purchase additional repeaters after personnel responding to a medical call experienced a &#8220;radio failure&#8221;&nbsp;leading to difficulty treating a patient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The fire department has identified 11 buildings that could cause communication issues for first responders, according to the Oct. 23 memorandum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sites include several self-storage facilities, Publix buildings, large warehouses, and manufacturing plants.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These addresses are flagged in the department&#8217;s Computer Aided Dispatch system so dispatchers are aware of potential issues before sending people to the scene, according to the document.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The department has issued clear instructions to firefighters and first responders on how to respond to incidents reported at these 11 locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>&#8220;[W]hile arriving on scene, assess the situation and if there is any doubt about what is going on inside the structure, stage until the arrival of Battalion 1 and the mobile repeater to make entry,&#8221;<\/strong> reads Wilson&#8217;s memorandum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This may cause the first crew arriving on the scene, if not the battalion chief, to have to wait additional time before taking further action to assist in an emergency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Lakeland has ordered two more permanent vehicle repeaters, which are still pending delivery to be installed on the other battalion chief trucks.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Lakeland Fire Department has taken immediate actions to prevent further &#8220;radio failure&#8221; during potential critical moments.
