Crews at Kathleen Middle School have started to repair the\ngaping hole left by an EF-2 tornado.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tornado touched down Friday night in parts of Polk\nCounty, destroying homes, churches, and schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Kathleen Middle School, a historic building and a fixture of\nthe community, was torn apart. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

About four inches of water flooded the entire school after\nthe fire suppression system was damaged by the tornado. The school\u2019s\nelectronics and computer labs were wrecked by water damage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In just three days, restoration crews have cleaned up debris\nand started patching the roof. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Deputy Superintendent of Polk Schools John Hill says he\u2019s\nproud of the resilience of the community. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m really optimistic about this. Everyone has come\ntogether because for these students and our staff, it\u2019s their home.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The district was not able to provide an updated timeline for\nstudents to return to class, but that will be determined early this week. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Classes are canceled Monday and Tuesday at the middle school\nbut continue as normal in the rest of the district. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The district will bring in 12 portable classrooms so\nstudents can return to school as soon as possible.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
