{"id":41041,"date":"2024-01-17T16:46:49","date_gmt":"2024-01-17T21:46:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/?p=41041"},"modified":"2024-01-17T16:46:53","modified_gmt":"2024-01-17T21:46:53","slug":"trial-for-man-accused-of-killing-former-lakeland-commissioner-and-husband-moves-forward-with-jury-selection","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/2024\/01\/17\/trial-for-man-accused-of-killing-former-lakeland-commissioner-and-husband-moves-forward-with-jury-selection\/","title":{"rendered":"Trial for man accused of killing former Lakeland commissioner and husband moves forward with jury selection"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A man accused of&nbsp;stabbing a former Lakeland commissioner and her husband to death is headed to trial three years after the double murder.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Attorneys met at the&nbsp;Polk County&nbsp;Courthouse for jury selection on Tuesday.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1600\" height=\"800\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1600px) 100vw, 1600px\" src=\"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/WALDON.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41042\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Marcelle Waldon is charged with killing former Lakeland commissioner Edith Yates Henderson and her husband David Henderson on November 10, 2020, at their Lake Morton home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigators with the&nbsp;Lakeland&nbsp;Police Department said they think Waldon had been watching the couple\u2019s home before he walked in through an unlocked door that morning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">They say he entered the home after David Henderson had stepped out to pick up breakfast, leaving Edith Yates Henderson alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"932\" height=\"524\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 932px) 100vw, 932px\" src=\"https:\/\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Edith-Yates-Henderson-and-her-husband-David-Henderson-on-November-10-2020-at-their-Lake-Morton-home.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-41043\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Once inside the home, police say he held Edith Yates Henderson at gunpoint and forced her to write two $5,000 checks to him before stabbing her to death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to LPD, her husband met the same fate when he returned home.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigators say they believe Walden tried to burn the evidence by turning on gas appliances in the home before driving away in the victim&#8217;s vehicle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Investigators said a source called police and led them to Waldon, who had been staying at the Relax Inn in Lakeland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Another suspect was arrested later that month trying to pawn jewelry that was confirmed to be taken from the home.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Suspect, Jarvis Collins, 37, told investigators that Waldon had given him the jewelry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Police say they found no connection between the suspects and the victims, and believe the attack was random.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The State Attorney\u2019s Office is seeking the death penalty.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A man accused of&nbsp;stabbing a former Lakeland commissioner and her husband to death is headed to trial three years after the double murder.&nbsp;
