A\nLakeland police K9 officer was charged with driving under the influence early\nSaturday morning in Fort Walton Beach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Chad\nA. Landry, 35, was arrested at about 5:30 a.m. while driving erratically in his\nLPD-issued Chevrolet Tahoe SUV on U.S. 98 in the Panhandle beach community,\naccording to an arrest report.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\narresting Okaloosa County Sheriff\u2019s deputy reported that Landry made an\nuncontrolled U-turn in front of oncoming traffic and continued to \u201cswerve\nmultiple times over the inner lane divider lines.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After\na short pursuit the deputy stopped Landry in front of a T-shirt shop on\nOkaloosa Island. Landry appeared dazed, had slurred speech and staggered and\nswayed when standing, the report said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Landry\ndid not have his driver license when stopped by the deputy and refused to take\na blood-alcohol test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Landry\nand other members of LPD\u2019s K9 unit were in Fort Walton Beach in advance of the\nU.S. Police Canine Association national field trials and certification event\nthat began Monday and continues through Friday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Landry\nfailed four field sobriety tests before being booked for DUI and his\nsupervising sergeant, Aaron Peterman, took custody of Landry\u2019s vehicle,\naccording to the Northwest Florida Daily News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According\nto the newspaper, Landry filed a public records exemption form to shield his\nphotograph taken at the time of his arrest, along with other arrest information,\nfrom entering the public record. That is an option afforded to law enforcement\npersonnel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\n\n\n\nThe incident involving Landry is the second time in three years that a member\nof the Lakeland Police Department\u2019s elite K9 unit has run into trouble during\nthe United States Police Canine Association National Police Dog Trials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After\nthe 2017 USPCA trials in Foley, Alabama, nine members of LPD\u2019s K9 unit \u2014 the\nentire unit \u2014 were suspended after a recording by fellow drivers showed a\ncaravan of K9 units traveling at speeds over 100 miles per hour on the way back\nto Lakeland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Lakeland\u2019s\nK9 unit won top honors at the 2018 USPCA Region One Field Trials in Escambia\nCounty, taking home Top Dog, Overall Winner and the Fred Wheeler Award for Top\nCombined Obedience and Apprehension, along with first-place awards for Agility,\nTotal Search (Evidence and Suspect) and Apprehension.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Landry,\nwho is partnered with K9 Nox, joined LPD in 2015 having previously served at\npolice departments in Lake Wales and Sebring. He was promoted to LPD\u2019s K9 unit\nin December 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\nLakeland Police Department reported that Landry \u2014 who makes an annual salary of\n$57,894 \u2014 is no longer at the field trials competition and has been placed on\npaid administrative leave from the department.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
