As the plane lifted off, witnesses heard some sputtering, The wing dropped and he crashed directly into the ground.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The airplane was new and had gained a certificate of airworthiness in October, Judd said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sheriff Grady Judd said Arthur Canning was a pilot who had flown ultralight aircraft for 10 years. \u201cSo he is not a novice.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"764\" height=\"432\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1110px) 100vw, 1110px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/plane-crash-Mulberry-4224.webp?resize=764%2C432&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-43678\"\/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The sheriff said Arthur Canning had just started to fly the plane on Saturday and the fatal flight was its third flight.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"499\" height=\"443\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1110px) 100vw, 1110px\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Screenshot-50-2.png?resize=499%2C443&#038;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-43680\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Screenshot-50-2.png?w=499&amp;ssl=1 499w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/lakelandgazette.info\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/Screenshot-50-2.png?resize=300%2C266&amp;ssl=1 300w\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The South Lakeland Airstrip does not have a control tower and pilots rely on sight to navigate takeoffs and landings along its runway.
