<\/figure>\n\n\n\nThe Familiar is a story rooted in deep history. Luzia Cotado is a scullion with a secret to protect. When it is discovered, she decides she\u2019s tired of making herself disappear. She flaunts her \u201clittle miracles\u201d for her mistress and soon finds herself caught in a scheme that is more than she bargained for. She must hide her family\u2019s origin and prove her miracles are \u201choly\u201d by the Inquisition\u2019s standards. Leigh Bardugo\u2019s writing allowed me to feel every character\u2019s emotions. Their hopes and fears were mine. The story started out a bit slow, but it was worth sticking with. The characters were flawed and acknowledged their good and bad parts. Was it selfish for Luzia to want more for her life no matter the risk? Depends on who you ask. I enjoyed the many facets of all the characters. I also enjoyed the historical aspects of the book. I didn\u2019t know much about Spain in the time of the Inquistion, but Bardugo did well at painting a picture of the fear and unrest of the Spanish citizens. The story was captivating. It was one of those stories where everything connects together, which was very satisfying. The ending was very neat with no loose ends, which I appreciated. Overall this was a very good book. I would recommend it to fantasy fans that are looking for something a bit different than usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
