The CDC reports it\u2019s normal to see an increase of the norovirus in the winter, but infections continue to tick upwards as we head into spring and summer.<\/p>\n\n\n

 \u201cIt causes nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea,\u201d Dr. Timothy Hendrix, the Medical Director for AdventHealth Centra Care Urgent Care, said. \u201cWe typically see it in the wintertime. But this outbreak seems to be lasting into the spring.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the latest data from laboratories across the country reporting to the CDC, the rate of norovirus tests returning positive, averaged over three weeks, was nearly 14% as of April 11th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cPeople are coming in with those very similar symptoms to urgent care for several weeks now,\u201d Dr. Hendrix said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That is up from about 9% in mid-January.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Hendrix said it\u2019s hard to pinpoint precisely why the number of infections continues to rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt is a very infectious agent,\u201d he said. \u201cOnce it starts spreading, it\u2019ll go for several weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The virus most commonly spreads within families, schools, and cruise ships.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cNorovirus is so contagious,\u201d Dr. Hendrix said. \u201cIt stays on surfaces; it\u2019s transmitted easily from person to person.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Symptoms typically last for 24 to 72 hours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Hendrix said if you are sick or want to avoid getting sick, it\u2019s back to the basics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

 \u201cHandwashing, staying home if you\u2019re sick, and avoiding contact with people if you\u2019re sick,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Since it is a virus, there is no real treatment. Dr. Hendrix recommends patients to drink plenty of water and to get plenty of rest.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
